Bayonne Bridge Construction Update

River View Observer: "On the new roadway from 6th Street o the bridge’s main span, workers are continuing to install lighting, drainage systems, electrical systems, the barrier wall, and other roadway-related structures."

Editorial: PATH, bus terminal essential to PA "The replacement of the Goethals Bridge is underway. Elevation of the Bayonne Bridge will allow new, larger container ships to access our ports. And even Port Authority critics, state Sens. Loretta Weinberg, D-Teaneck, and Bob Gordon, D-Fair Lawn, told The Record’s editorial board recently that the remodeled GWB Bus Station, nearing completion despite delays, will be impressive once it is opened."

NY-NJ terminal blames harsh weather for truck delays "The congestion reflects the difficulties at the heavily used port, where turn times can easily rise above two hours, as it works to ensure the swift and smooth arrival of trucks and containers in and out of the port in preparation for the arrival of increasingly larger ships. That is expected to happen once a project to elevate the Bayonne Bridge is completed at the end of 2017. At present, the low elevation of the bridge prevents big ships passing below and reaching three out of the four terminals — among them PNCT."

Traffic Continues During 'Raise the Roadway' Project

Construction Equipment Guide: “The project marks the first time engineers are building a bridge roadway above the original span, even as the lower road continues to carry traffic,” said Neal Buccino, senior public information officer with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. “It will maintain the steel arch that makes the Bayonne Bridge a civil engineering landmark, while giving drivers a safer, wider and more modern roadway with 12-foot lanes, new shoulders, a median divider, and a 12-foot bike and pedestrian walkway.”

Big ship ready – Video Case Histories

DC Velocity: "That Bayonne Bridge project she mentions is a massive engineering marvel and one of the largest ever undertaken in the region. The $1.3 billion project involves building a new roadway 65 feet above the original road surface. The tricky part is that the construction is taking place while commuters, trucks, and others are using the bridge on a daily basis. Once completed, the original roadway will be removed so that taller ships as large as 18,000 TEUs can easily pass below."

NY-NJ appointment system cuts truck turns without major hitch

JOC: "The system, at just one of out of six terminals at the largest port on the East Coast, is designed to improve drayage efficiency. Such efficiency at the port is critical as it prepares to meet the increased workload and additional systemic stress expected after the completion of a project at the end of this year to raise the Bayonne Bridge. The project will enable ships that can carry more than 10,000 twenty-foot-equivalent units to stop at all four of the port’s main terminals. Only one — Global Container Terminal — is at present accessible to big ships because they can’t get under the bridge."

Is 2017 the Year of the Anticipated Coastal Import Shift?

Colliers International: "ALL EYES ON THE BAYONNE BRIDGE: New York-New Jersey, the largest port on the East Coast, is still expected to be the main beneficiary of any increase in inbound container volume from the Panama Canal expansion. This is because of its proximity to the largest population concentration on the East Coast and the recent dredging project that deepened its harbor to 50 feet."

Where the Second Avenue Subway Went Wrong

The New Yorker: "When New Jersey wanted to raise the roadway of the Bayonne Bridge, it took five years, and twenty thousand pages of paperwork, for the project to get under way. Obviously, environmental and workplace standards are important, but a recent paper by Philip Howard, the chairman of Common Good, suggests that a more streamlined regulatory process, like those found in many developed countries, could save hundreds of billions of dollars."

New alliances, bigger ships put US ports on high alert "At New York-New Jersey, the largest port on the East Coast and the third-largest in the US, 2017 is likely to be dominated by the port’s preparation for the year-end opening of the elevated Bayonne Bridge. The bridge, which will be 215 feet high instead of 151 feet currently, will enable ships of up to 18,000-TEU capacity to call at all four of the port’s main terminals. Only ships of less than 10,000 TEUs are currently able to call because the existing bridge is too low to allow large ships to berth at three of the port’s main terminals; only Global Container Terminal in Bayonne, New Jersey, located on the channel before the bridge, is currently able to service larger ships."
