Last week, the administration, as part of its "We Can't Wait" initiative, issued an executive order to speed infrastructure improvements at five East Coast ports. Among them: An expedited study of deepening the channel at the Port of Charleston; expediting permitting to raise the Bayonne Bridge and deepening the channels at the Port of New York and New Jersey; accelerating the timeline to deepen the channels at Savannah and Miami, and a variety of steps to speed permitting and reviews to modernize the Port of Jacksonville.
As you can see, none of these projects are on the West Coast, much less in the Puget Sound. All these competing ports on the right coast stand to benefit from the wider Panama Canal, scheduled to be completed as early as 2014. It will allow the transit of wider container ships from Asia direct to ports on the East Coast. Much of this traffic has gone through West Coast ports."

Forget Madison County! Here are the Majestic Bridges of New York City - InfoBarrel: "One of the unheralded but still strikingly beautiful accesses to new York City is the Bayonne bridge that connects the state of New jersey with the city across the Kill Van Kull. This bridge is by most accounts one of least majestic of the bridges of New York City and yet is the fourth largest steel arch bridge in the world.
The Bayonne Bridge is also notable for the current renovation project that is planned for it. The bridge is an impediment to any ships wishing to enter the Port of Newark. With the expansion of the Panama Canal, larger container ships will be visiting this port but would be unable to pass under the current bridge. The civil engineers engaged to solve the problem have decided to build a rod bed above the existing one and then demolish the lower level. Bridge technology will take another leap forward on the majestic bridges of New York City."

A biologist climbed to the top of a tower Friday to the tag a pair of falcon chicks in the nest, and received plenty of static from the parent birds.

The chicks were named Archie and Juliette and may have a pretty good life ahead of them once they grow into their flying feathers. The area around the bridge is flush with food in the form of starlings, pigeons and other birds, the New York Post said, as well as plenty of tall buildings where falcons can perch during their hunting sorties."

Port Richmond | Staten Island Waterfront 2012
Port Richmond | Staten Island Waterfront 2012: "Much of Port Richmond sits on a narrow stretch of what is known geologically as the ‘Palisades Sill,’ surrounded by the Brunswick and Stockton Geologic Formations, which are from a similar time and history. The 200-million-year-old Palisades Sill, an underground upheaval, extends down from Newburgh to New Jersey; it is most visible at the Palisades, a cliff-face extending north from the George Washington Bridge for about twenty miles. Its route can be roughly traced on the Palisades Interstate Parkway. Sections of the Palisades Sill can also be seen near the Bayonne Bridge, albeit less impressively. Much of Newark Bay and the Lower Hudson River Valley follow the formation’s undersea counterparts to the ocean – or rather, a lake just inland from the ocean, bottled in by the isthmus crossing the Narrows. When glacial moraine broke through the Narrows about 10,000 years ago, the draining of the ‘dammed’ lake left the waterways we know today."

NJ Spotlight | Some Sketchy Good News Has to Suffice at NJ Transportation Conference
NJ Spotlight | Some Sketchy Good News Has to Suffice at NJ Transportation Conference: "Gov. Chris Christie's attack on Democratic legislators overshadowed transit issues at the alliance's annual transportation conference at the Trenton Marriott. An audience of contractors, engineers, consultants, and bureaucrats gobbled up the Governor's partisan red meat, giving him standing ovations on arrival and departure.
Before he arrived, though, a parade of speakers from the administration and transportation providers talked bullishly about a number of transportation projects, such as raising the Bayonne Bridge over the Kill Van Kull to allow larger vessels to use the Port of New York and New Jersey."

Port Strategy - Bridges to mend and to build
Port Strategy - Bridges to mend and to build: "But while this dispute may be the subject of most attention regarding the PANYNJ, it is also interesting to note that the authority is seeking to utilise a new fast track permit process to implement a $1bn project to raise the Bayonne Bridge. This has to be done to facilitate the entry of the larger size container vessels that are expected in the port following the opening of the widened Panama Canal. Even if it does achieve fast track permitting, however, the bridge project will not be completed for some time after the new canal system opens for business."
