Bridges of size

Noseweek: "The bridge finally opened on 19  March 1932. At 505 metres, it was aiming to become the largest single- span-arch bridge in the world. Alas, just before the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon, Bryson wryly records that “the Bayonne bridge in New York quietly opened and was found to be 6.35cm – 0.121% longer.”

Expanded Panama Canal to affect North American logistics flows

MMD: "In New York, for example, harbour navigation channels were deepened, and the Bayonne bridge, at the entrance of Newark Bay, is being raised. The project was touted as possibly “the most important and influential project related to modern day economics in the Northeast. Modern-day container ships may now enter the port fully loaded and safely,” said Col. David Caldwell, the Army Corps’ New York District Commander.

“Completion of the harbour deepening project is a major milestone in our efforts to meet the needs of the region’s 23 million consumers now and in the future,” said Port Authority Port Department Director Molly Campbell. “It culminates more than 25 years of work and $6 billion in public and private sector investment to ready the port for the new generation of vessels, and will continue to support the 336,000 jobs and billions in economic activity the port generates.”

The New York project will ensure that area businesses have easier and more affordable access to global markets with the completion of the Panama Canal expansion—and improve the shipping of goods to nearly 100 million American consumers living on the East Coast."

Why can t cops crack down on jitney buses Death of an 11 year old in Jersey City may cause a change

Hudson Reporter: "Some of the jitneys that run from the foot of the Bayonne Bridge to New York City are covered under federal interstate laws, and so it would take a federal authority to oversee any street side inspection. "

Last two Hanjin ships set to call NY-NJ port

JOC.com: "The Hanjin Bremerhaven’s arrival follows the berthing Tuesday of another Hanjin ship that was previously arrested and held near the Panama Canal, the 7,500-TEU Hanjin Baltimore. It unloaded 1,500 containers at Maher Terminals and then moved to Global Container Terminals in Bayonne to unload 200 more containers.

The Hanjin Baltimore stopped at both terminals to avoid any problems passing under the Bayonne Bridge.

The bridge is too low for larger ships to pass under without being weighed down with cargo, but vessels must do so to get to Maher Terminals, the only one of the port’s four main terminals with a regular Hanjin call. Port officials worried that if all the containers were removed from the vessel at Maher Terminals, the ship would be too high to go under the bridge on departure."

New Hudson River rail tunnel could be funded by 2019

NJ.com: "The Hudson River tunnels have been included on the "President's Permitting Dashboard" which allows the same kind of fast tracking that the Port Authority used to speed up reconstruction of the Bayonne Bridge. That could save one year on an environmental review that is under way and "billions of dollars" off the final Gateway cost, Schumer said."

Hanjin ships head to NY-NJ as lawyers squabble

JOC.Com: "The Hanjin Switzerland docked at Maher Terminals about 7 p.m. Thursday in an unusual two-part move that also involved a stop at the Global Container Terminal in Bayonne, where cargo was removed and placed on a barge and sent on to Maher Terminals. The move was designed to avoid problems fitting the ship under the Bayonne Bridge."

Hanjin Bankruptcy Fiasco Still Hurting Apparel Importers

California Apparel News: "On the East Coast, a Hanjin ship that was to dock at Maher Terminals at the Port of New York and New Jersey will be landing at the Global Container Terminal in Bayonne, N.J. The concern was if the ship left the port filled with empty cargo containers it would sit too high and not be able to pass under the Bayonne Bridge.

So cargo will be unloaded in Bayonne, loaded onto a barge and taken to Maher Terminals."

Trump and Clinton pledge billions to fix US infrastructure

E&T Magazine: "One example he frequently cites is the Bayonne Bridge ‘Raise the Roadway’ project. Its economic objective is sound. The bridge connects New Jersey and Staten Island, NY, and raising its clearance will allow the new generation of larger Panamax container ships to pass easily into Newark Bay.

This is being achieved by building a new roadway above the existing one and removing the original. The bridge’s existing foundations and rights-of-way were carefully integrated into the design so that it would arguably have no significant environmental impact.

Yet, as Howard points out, there was a five-year pre-project review that resulted in a 20,000-page environmental assessment. Even after Bayonne’s approval, the project was then challenged in court by groups who thought the assessment insufficient."

Second Hanjin ship to call NY-NJ port since bankruptcy

JOC.com: "By docking at that terminal, rather than the scheduled point of arrival at Maher Terminals, the 9,030-twenty-foot-equivalent-unit vessel will avoid any possible difficulty passing under the Bayonne Bridge, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said Tuesday."

Port of New York/New Jersey is meeting tomorrow’s challenges

AJOT.COM: "The Kill Van Kull is the principle strait through which all cargo ships enter Port Elizabeth and Port Newark. Robbins Reef Light marks the entrance to the channel, which spans 3 miles to Bergen Point, just under the Bayonne Bridge. At its widest point it is 0.5 miles. The Kill’s four doglegs are of particular interest to harbor pilots. A starboard turn must also be negotiated after clearing the bridge between Bergen Point and Shooters Island, a span of 0.65 mi in order to reach the container terminals in Newark Bay. The MSC Beryl with a 12,400 TEU capacity has a length of over 12,000 feet and a beam of nearly 159 feet. She draws 50.85-feet of water.  As a result of her size, the ship will have to await high tide to transit through the Kill Van Kull. It’s been said that big ships act like giant sails. With minimal water under her keel and a 15-knot wind, a ship like the MSC Beryl will require skillful navigating to transit from the Upper New York Bay to Newark Bay."
