Letter: Bayonne's mayor fails to stand up to Port Authority in bridge projecT

Letter: NJ.com

The Difference Makers 101

The Port Authority is Born |: " The matter of Port development is critical. It affects the housing problems; it affects the cost of living; it affects the cost of doing business within the Port of New York; business is leaving New York because of inadequate facilities, and rival ports are taking advantage of delays in the development of New York’s plans in order to strengthen their own position. —  Alfred Smith, 1920"

Skanska JV's NJ Bayonne Bridge project delayed 2 years

Construction Dive: "Although the project will not be complete until 2019, larger container ships, the Port Authority said, will be able to utilize the bridge’s increased navigational clearance in late 2017."

Late hours at DCs may be key to resolving NY-NJ port congestion

JOC.com: "That is why, as the port prepares itself to handle even larger ships that will arrive following the expansion of the Panama Canal, the raising of the Bayonne Bridge, and completion of the port’s 50-foot deepening project, attention is turning to the region’s hundreds of distribution centers as a potential relief valve.

“What we need to do in the future is find supply chain solutions, not just port solutions, John Nardi, president of the New York Shipping Association told the Port Industry Day. “If the warehouse isn’t opened the port gets blamed, so this is something we collectively need to work on.”"

America’s Top Container Ports

Global Trade Magazine: "PORT OF NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY
Turning limitations into assets led Port of New York and New Jersey authorities to recently deepen the port’s harbor to 50 feet and raise the Bayonne Bridge by 64 feet. Previously, the port’s infrastructure restricted larger container ships, admits Richard Larrabee, director of Port Commerce. The port is also benefiting from a $700 million investment in on-dock rail infrastructure, which streamlines the handling of the region’s key vehicle, plastic and wood pulp exports."

Bayonne Bridge delay: Can't anybody here play this game? (commentary)

SILive.com: "The Bayonne is generally the most unsung of the four bridges that touch the Island. But it's a crucial link in that it gives North Shore residents in particular an option if the Outerbridge Crossing and the Goethals Bridge are jammed with traffic."

How Lengthy Environmental Review Harms the Environment

Philip K. Howard: "Environmental review has instead evolved into an agonizing crawl through years of meetings and mind-numbing detail. A project to raise the roadway of the Bayonne Bridge has almost no environmental impact -- it uses the same foundations and right of way -- but nonetheless required a 10,000 page environmental assessment."

An interactive look at future Staten Island developments

SILive.com: "The $1.3 billion "Raise the Roadway" project, which seeks to raise the Bayonne Bridge 64 feet — from 151 feet to 215 feet above the Kill van Kull — should be fully complete by the second quarter of 2017. Currently the span has the lowest navigational clearance of any bridge in the area and one of the lowest in the country. When it's finished, the bridge will have four 12-foot wide lanes — two in each direction – a 12-foot wide pedestrian/biking path, nearly 5-foot wide shoulders on each side and the option to run light rail across in the future. The elevated Jersey-bound lanes should be complete some time in 2016, at which point they’ll open to traffic, but the entire span, with a new roadway, medians and walkway won't be done until the second quarter of 2017."
