Big new tugboats coming in 2017
WorkBoat: "The new tugs will be McAllister’s first to meet the stringent U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tier 4 air emission standards for higher horsepower vessels. After the completion of a $1.3 billion project to raise the Bayonne Bridge over the Kill Van Kull channel, the tugs will be taking those ships under it to Port Newark on the New Jersey side of the harbor."
Verrazano lane closures show MTA just doesn't care (commentary)
SILive.com: "It almost seems futile to complain. Because what has complaining gotten us in the past? Nothing. Entities like the MTA and Department of Transportation, both city and state, probably figure that when it comes to anything related to traffic, Staten Islanders are just going to complain anyway, so why should we listen to what they have to say? Let's just do whatever we need to do. Here's why they should listen: Because we're the ones paying the freight. Particularly when it comes to the Verrazano, the toll money from which is used to subsidize the Long Island Railroad and Metro-North. And because we're the ones who are vitally dependent on the Verrazano, like we're vitally dependent on the other three Staten Island spans. After all, we are an island. There's no other way for us to drive off the borough. It's not like this everywhere. In a show of motorist consideration, the project to raise the Bayonne Bridge is being suspended so the bridge can stay open around the clock this holiday season."
How does an N.J. driver get a discount on Staten Island bridges?
NJ.com: "Generally, you would be out of luck if you're using a New York MTA run bridge, such as the Verrazano Bridge, to and from Staten Island. But the Outerbridge is run by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which offers a commuter discount for its Staten Island crossings, which include the Outerbridge Crossing, the Goethals Bridge and the Bayonne Bridge. GOT QUESTIONS? Ticked off about mass transit? Wondering about road construction? E-mail your questions to NJ.com's transportation expert Larry Higgs. He'll answer your questions on Tuesdays and Thursdays on NJ.com. You can also Tweet @CommutingLarr are in luck. Drivers who sign up for the agency's Staten Island bridges plan get a 50 percent discount off the E-Z-Pass rate of $12.50 which comes to $6.25 per trip. Drivers have to make a minimum of three Staten Island-bound trips a month to qualify for the plan."

Bayonne The Year In Review
Hudson Reporter: "Parks in Bayonne are steadily being renovated to meet a growing public demand for open space. Dog walkers, seniors taking their constitutionals, joggers, and anyone who loves great views of the bridge and the waterfront are proving the value of city parks. Skateboarders and BMX bikers were ecstatic when the city opened the 1st Street Skate Park next to the Bayonne Bridge. The all-cement park was dedicated in September to Tyler Sellers, a 20-year-old who died crossing Route 440."

NY-NJ port loses East Coast share amid congestion concerns
JOC.com: "The port has also invested heavily to bring on-dock or near-dock railway to the port’s five biggest terminals and to dredge its channels to 50 feet. Late in 2017, the authority expects to complete the raising of the Bayonne Bridge’s 151-foot vertical clearance to 215, feet, allowing larger ships to fit under it. The present low elevation means that at present most ships larger than 10,000 twenty-foot-equivalent units, and many smaller vessels, can get to only one of the port’s terminals."

Even as they maneuver for a share of the $1 trillion in spending President-elect Donald Trump promised to rebuild America’s roads, bridges and airports, lobbyists for transportation and utility industries are beginning to wonder whether Trump really meant what he said. Bayonne Bridge Blog Achieves 100,000 Hits
I have run this blog since 2009 when it was obvious that the bridge was going to be redesigned or rebuilt. I live about 1/2 block away from the base of the bridge, so I started this blog to record and track its progress and development as a service to the neighborhood and region. Today we hit over 100,000 hits/visits. Thank you!
I will continue to update the blog until the project is completed (and maybe thereafter). Until then, I thank you again for visiting the site and hope you have the opportunity to travel over this historical arch now, or at some point, in the future.
See you at 200,000 hits!

At Sea With New York Harbor’s Channel Masters
The New York Times: "If the water in the harbor were to evaporate, you would see a series of trenches snaking from the Atlantic into the Hudson and around Staten Island into Newark Bay. For more than a decade, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the Army Corps of Engineers have been digging a 50-foot-deep channel to accommodate a new generation of supersize ships traveling to New York from an expanded Panama Canal. As part of the project, the Bayonne Bridge is being raised, and once all of the work is completed, ships more than four football fields long, carrying as many as 9,000 40-foot containers, will be able to reach marine terminals in New Jersey."

SILive.com: "It's typical on an anniversary to reflect on how far you've come in the years you've spent together.
And the Bayonne Bridge, which spans the Kill Van Kull to link Bayonne, N.J., and Port Richmond, has come a long way in the 85 years since it opened to traffic Nov. 15, 1931. The bridge is currently in the middle of its $1.3 billion "Raise the Roadway" construction project, which began in 2013.
On Tuesday, as the bridge celebrated its special day, the Port Authority made a special announcement of its own regarding its progress with the project: The installation of a new, elevated roadway that stands 215 feet above mean high water over the Kill Van Kull and 64 feet higher than the existing roadway. The additional air draft will allow the Port of New York and New Jersey to welcome larger and more efficient vessels.
Media was invited Tuesday to walk over the new roadway, which will initially open with two 12-foot lanes of traffic, one in each direction."

Six Bridges : The Legacy of Othmar H. Ammann: Darl Rastorfer
Amazon.com: Othmar Ammann's name may be unfamiliar, but the six magnificent New York City bridges he created are known to all: George Washington, Bayonne, Triborough, Bronx-Whitestone, Throgs Neck, and Verrazano-Narrows. Ammann's long-span bridges came to define an epoch and shape the modern New York metropolis. This book is the first to examine the genius of Ammann and the special group of bridges he designed and engineered as part of the New York region's interstate highway system. With more than 200 archival photographs, the book vividly displays the physical transformation of New York, the development of long-span suspension structures, the construction process of each bridge, and the spectacular completed bridges. Widely considered the greatest American bridge designer of the twentieth century, Swiss-born Ammann (1879-1965) gained experience designing railroad bridges in Pennsylvania before beginning his work in New York City. This book considers the artistic, scientific, and technical achievements embodied in the six major bridges Ammann produced between 1925 and 1964, as well as the bridges' impact on the city. The book features an illustrated and annotated list of all Ammann's built and unbuilt projects and a glossary of technical terms.

Prospects for a New Container Terminal at Halifax
Maritime.com"Prior to the opening of the enlarged Panama Canal to transit neo-Panamax size ships of 13,000 TEUs, several North American East Coast ports undertook programs to modify their berths and terminals for the larger container ships. At Newark, the Bayonne Bridge was raised to transit the larger ships at high tide, while the port was dredged to accommodate deeper draft vessels. At Halifax, the Angus L. MacDonald Bridge was raised to 50 meters above sea level to transit larger vessels that could sail into Bedford Basin. Work is underway at Saint John, New Brunswick, to serve neo-Panamax ships."

N.S. should support port of Halifax over container facilities in Canso, Sydney: study
CTV Atlantic News: "The study raises a number of red flags for the Port of Halifax's future, saying that the shipping industry may be about to go through a period of consolidation and Halifax is considered a "discretionary" harbour in comparison to competitors along the U.S. northeastern coast and Montreal. The raising of the Bayonne Bridge in New York will increase the harbour's ability to admit large ships and "this will likely erode some of the Port of Halifax's business as it will no longer have the same advantage over New York/New Jersey for accommodating ships over 8,000 TEUs," it says. The lack of a large local market also creates headwinds for the success of Halifax, as ships tend to prefer to unload at larger centers where they can increase profits by offloading close to the final destination, says the report."

Nightmare Before Christmas
AJOT.COM: " In the PANYNJ a recent Hanjin vessel scheduled to call at a terminal in Newark Bay had to be diverted to Global Marine Terminal, Bayonne. Expanded Panama Canal to affect North American logistics flows
MMD: "In New York, for example, harbour navigation channels were deepened, and the Bayonne bridge, at the entrance of Newark Bay, is being raised. The project was touted as possibly “the most important and influential project related to modern day economics in the Northeast. Modern-day container ships may now enter the port fully loaded and safely,” said Col. David Caldwell, the Army Corps’ New York District Commander.
“Completion of the harbour deepening project is a major milestone in our efforts to meet the needs of the region’s 23 million consumers now and in the future,” said Port Authority Port Department Director Molly Campbell. “It culminates more than 25 years of work and $6 billion in public and private sector investment to ready the port for the new generation of vessels, and will continue to support the 336,000 jobs and billions in economic activity the port generates.”

Last two Hanjin ships set to call NY-NJ port
JOC.com: "The Hanjin Bremerhaven’s arrival follows the berthing Tuesday of another Hanjin ship that was previously arrested and held near the Panama Canal, the 7,500-TEU Hanjin Baltimore. It unloaded 1,500 containers at Maher Terminals and then moved to Global Container Terminals in Bayonne to unload 200 more containers.
The Hanjin Baltimore stopped at both terminals to avoid any problems passing under the Bayonne Bridge.
The bridge is too low for larger ships to pass under without being weighed down with cargo, but vessels must do so to get to Maher Terminals, the only one of the port’s four main terminals with a regular Hanjin call. Trump and Clinton pledge billions to fix US infrastructure
E&T Magazine: "One example he frequently cites is the Bayonne Bridge ‘Raise the Roadway’ project. Its economic objective is sound. The bridge connects New Jersey and Staten Island, NY, and raising its clearance will allow the new generation of larger Panamax container ships to pass easily into Newark Bay.
This is being achieved by building a new roadway above the existing one and removing the original. The bridge’s existing foundations and rights-of-way were carefully integrated into the design so that it would arguably have no significant environmental impact.
Yet, as Howard points out, there was a five-year pre-project review that resulted in a 20,000-page environmental assessment. Even after Bayonne’s approval, the project was then challenged in court by groups who thought the assessment insufficient."

Port of New York/New Jersey is meeting tomorrow’s challenges
AJOT.COM: "The Kill Van Kull is the principle strait through which all cargo ships enter Port Elizabeth and Port Newark. Robbins Reef Light marks the entrance to the channel, which spans 3 miles to Bergen Point, just under the Bayonne Bridge. At its widest point it is 0.5 miles. The Kill’s four doglegs are of particular interest to harbor pilots. A starboard turn must also be negotiated after clearing the bridge between Bergen Point and Shooters Island, a span of 0.65 mi in order to reach the container terminals in Newark Bay. The MSC Beryl with a 12,400 TEU capacity has a length of over 12,000 feet and a beam of nearly 159 feet. She draws 50.85-feet of water. As a result of her size, the ship will have to await high tide to transit through the Kill Van Kull. It’s been said that big ships act like giant sails. With minimal water under her keel and a 15-knot wind, a ship like the MSC Beryl will require skillful navigating to transit from the Upper New York Bay to Newark Bay."

Two more Hanjin ships set to call NY-NJ
JOC.com: "The South Korean bankruptcy court eventually freed funds for the work. But the ship then faced another problem: although it could fit under the Bayonne Bridge on its way into the terminal fully loaded, it would not be able to do so on its way out of the port after discharging its cargo. That was resolved by loading 800 empty containers owned by other CYKHE Alliance members onto the Hanjin Miami, which departed the port on Friday. The same issue, however, is likely to emerge with the Hanjin Switzerland, which is larger than the Hanjin Miami."

First Hanjin ship to call US East Coast port since bankruptcy
JOC.com: "The terminal agreed to work the ship after discussions with officials from labor, the terminal, and others involved resulted in the ship paying up front, and the parties came up with a plan to resolve a second problem — the fact that once unloaded, the ship would be too high to get under the Bayonne Bridge.
That will be solved by loading containers from other carriers on the ship to weigh it down enough to fit under the bridge, port authority said."

The park includes a concrete mini pipe, four-set staircase, and enough rails to keep grind-happy skaters from tearing up private property. "

FMC Commissioner Doyle Addresses Hanjin
FMC Commissioner Doyle Addresses Hanjin: "With respect to empties there is a problem with the vessel HANJIN MIAMI that is afloat outside of the Port of New York and New Jersey. The vessel is scheduled to be unloaded at the Maher Terminal. The MIAMI, provided there is funding to unload the ship, could indeed be unloaded at Maher. However, there are so many disputes right now attached to empty containers that the terminal is not going to load the empties back onto the ship. And, if the empties cannot be reloaded on the vessel, then the ship will not be able to depart the harbor because it would not have the air clearance to navigate under the Bayonne Bridge-- even at a dead low tide. The empties act as additional ballast weighting the ship down so it can navigate under the bridge. One solution discussed could be that empty containers owned or controlled by other ocean carriers could be loaded on the MIAMI."

Alchemy: Shipping and commodities go mainstream at New York Maritime Forum
Seatrade Maritime News: "The presenters from the PANYNJ, a political body now in the spotlight due to its ongoing “Bridge-gate” scandal, talked about the port’s move to compete in the East Coast arms race- attracting “discretionary cargo”. Bethann Rooney, assistant director of the PANYNJ’s Port Commerce Department, said that after the raising of the Bayonne Bridge (not the site of Bridge-gate), with late 2017 expected completion, 12,000 teu vessels would be expected to be the new “workhorse” in the port, with some 14,000 teu vessels, and possibly some 18,000 teu ships) making calls at the port."
Shippers question why Hanjin ships call some US ports but not others
JOC.com: "However, terminal operators in the United States are refusing to load Hanjin export containers, and empty containers, onto vessels, and that presents a problem for Maher. In order for the Miami to proceed outbound under the Bayonne Bridge, it needs loaded export containers aboard to weigh it down sufficiently in the water so it can fit under the bridge. A Hanjin vessel has also been drifting off the coast of Georgia, but there was no word from the Georgia Ports Authority as to when the vessel will proceed to berth."
New rail facility to extend Savannah’s Midwest intermodal reach
JOC.com: "Charleston is now deepening its harbor to 52 feet, strengthening its Wando Welch terminal to handle ship-to-shore cranes that are 155 feet high, compared with traditional cranes’ height of 115 feet, and implementing an automated gate system at the terminal. The harbors of the ports of Miami and Virginia are already 50 feet deep; Virginia is considering going even deeper, recently announcing a new $350 million investment to increase container capacity at one of its terminals. The Port of New York and New Jersey earlier this month completed its 50-foot deepening and work to raise the Bayonne Bridge roadway to allow larger ships to service the port’s largest terminals is expected to be finished by the end of 2017."

Container-on-barge launches across NY-NJ port harbor
JOC.com: "The service is intended to provide an alternative to the truck traffic that has sporadically choked the port with serious congestion, slowing the movement of goods and raising questions about the port’s ability to handle the growing volume of containers. About 15,000 truck trips a day go in and out of the port, and that is expected to increase as container volume rise, especially when a project to raise the Bayonne Bridge and allow larger ships into the entire port is completed late next year."

Ten Things You Don’t Know About Shipping |
PONYNJ: "When it comes to commercial shipping, history is being made across the New York/New Jersey region. The Bayonne Bridge and the mystery of the missing half-scissors
NY Daily News: "The span Down Under was the now-world famous Sydney Harbor Bridge. Though it opened a little later and was a few feet shorter than its American counterpart, bridge builders on opposite sides of the world decided to celebrate the spans as sister bridges, and commemorate the occasion by using the same pair of shears in both ribbon cuttings. Afterward, the plan was to split the scissors in half and send one part back stateside and let one part stay in Australia, according to the Port Authority blog."

60 Seconds with Michelle Brown, Choose New Jersey, Inc.
BusinessFacilities.com: "While completion of the $1.3 billion project to raise the clearance of the Bayonne Bridge from 150 to 215 feet to accommodate the largest vessels is scheduled for late 2017, there have been a series of infrastructure improvements at the Ports and beyond to ensure New Jersey will be ready for the super-containerships. For example, concurrent to the bridge raising project, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the Army Corps of Engineers have been working on a $1.6 billion harbor dredging project. The ExpressRail project at Port Newark will double its intermodal capacity to facilitate smooth sea/land connections; roads into and out of the Ports also has been expanded. Additionally, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority has invested $2.3 billion on a widening project that is the largest ongoing roadway project in the Western Hemisphere. The project, which includes approximately 35 miles of road improvements to alleviate potential traffic from the Ports as well as points north and south, is nearing completion."
The Port of Los Angeles gives a lesson in mega ships
WUNC: "New York just passed the halfway mark on its $1.3 billion project to raise the Bayonne Bridge, set to open in 2017. The aim is to attract mega ships, the ones now able to move through the expanded Panama Canal to the East Coast. But making room for these vessels with taller bridges and deeper harbors is just the beginning. The challenges start all over again when a giant ship actually docks."

WATCH Progress On New York Harbor's Bayonne Bridge
gCaptain: "At the moment, the span presents a difficult obstacle to large container ships passing under it on the way to and from Newark Bay. Its clearance of between 151 to 156 feet (46–48 m) above the Kill Van Kull depending on the tide means that today’s largest ships, which can reach 175 feet (53 m) above the waterline, must fold down antenna masts, take on ballast and/or wait for low tide to pass through. The problem will become more serious now that the Panama Canal expansion project allows larger new-Panamax ships through the canal."

What the bigger Panama Canal means for Australia and international shipping
Lloyd's List Australia - OPINION & ANALYSIS: "This has had its difficulties, such as the raising of the Bayonne Bridge roadway by 20 metres, a US$1.3 billion project due to be completed in late 2017 that is the key to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s efforts to attract larger container ships. Extensive and environmentally sensitive dredging is required at a number of East Coast ports to accommodate the larger vessels as well as extending the booms of ship to shore container cranes in order to service the wider container vessels."
Increased Traffic from Expanded Panama Canal Will Be a "Major Challenge" for New York-New Jersey, Says BMI
Ship & Bunker: "However, becoming able to handle this increase in trade volumes will be a major challenge for New York-New Jersey," said BMI, adding: "one of the major obstacles facing the port is the slow progress on a project to raise the Bayonne Bridge, which is not expected to be completed until late 2017."
BMI Research: US East Coast ports & Panama Canal expansion – no short-term benefits
Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide: "One of the major obstacles facing the port is the slow progress on a project to raise the Bayonne Bridge, which is not expected to be completed until late 2017. This project will allow the larger 14,000 TEU vessels which can pass through the expanded Panama Canal to enter the harbour. While investment in infrastructure needed to handle these larger ships has been underway at New York-New Jersey since 2010, numerous delays to the Bayonne Bridge project continue to limit the extent to which the port will be able to receive these vessels. Some major international shipping companies, including AP Moller-Maersk and Hapag Lloyd, have consequently elected not to change their routes, as the inability to access New York-New Jersey with larger ships means they are unable to achieve necessary economies of scale by plying East Coast rather than West Coast routes."

Its loss wasn’t discovered until 1981, when the Port Authority — preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Bayonne Bridge — wanted to bring the artifact out of retirement. It was nowhere to be found."

This will allow the bigger ships to pass under the bridge so they can get to the docks for loading and unloading. Another $1.6 billion will be spent deepening the harbor and shipping channel."

How US Spies Secured the Hiroshima Uranium
Consortiumnews: "There the uranium was put on Pan American airplanes or on ships, both bound for New York, where it was unloaded and stored on the New York City borough of Staten Island. There the uranium remained until it was ready to be used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. (The New York site under the Bayonne Bridge still registers radiation levels today high enough for the U.S. government to order a clean-up.)"

Watch: Bayonne Bridge 'Raise the Roadway' construction progress
SILive.com: ""One of the interesting things about the Bayonne Bridge is that with most bridges you're concerned primarily with traffic going over the bridge, with the Bayonne Bridge we're just as concerned with traffic that's passing beneath the bridge. ...," said Dennis Stabile, Port Authority program manager, Bayonne Bridge Program."

Don't Expect Huge Cargo Surge at U.S. East Coast Ports
Global Trade Magazine: "“The migration of seaborne cargo from the west coast to the east coast will continue to be a steady evolution,” the report concluded. “As it is, the MOL Benefactor is restricted to docking at the GCT Bayonne facility as the raising of the Bayonne Bridge—allowing the larger ships to pass under to reach the inner berths of Elizabeth and Newark—will not be completed until next year.”"

Total Impact of Panama Canal Widening May Be Delayed
GlobeSt.com: "Hotchkiss echoed Breeze’s sentiments about global skepticism and the port upgrades in Savannah, Charleston and Richmond having some impact on business. “They’re working hard to deepen their ports. Also, in the New York and New Jersey ports, there are issues with the Bayonne Bridge, so shippers may have to wait to use that port because they won’t be able to get into it.”"

Port Welcomed Largest Container Ship Ever To Call On New York/New Jersey
Global Trade Magazine: "To prepare for the new larger ships, the Port Authority and its private-sector tenants have invested $6 billion in projects to prepare the port complex. The most critical investment is the raising of the roadway on the Bayonne Bridge, a $1.3 billion project that will increase the navigational clearance under the bridge from 151 feet to 215 feet. The bridge’s navigational clearance will be in place by the end of 2017, allowing all terminals to serve the largest ships calling the port. Ships docking at GCT Bayonne do not have to travel under the Bayonne Bridge."

Massive Container Ship Arrives at Port of NY/NJ
TruckingInfo.com: "PANYNJ and its private-sector tenants have invested $6 billion in projects to prepare the port complex. The preparations includes raising the roadway on the Bayonne Bridge, increasing the navigational clearance under the bridge from 151 feet to 215 feet. The change will be in place by the end of 2017, allowing all terminals to serve the largest ships calling on the port."
HMM to deploy larger ships on trans-Pacific service calling US East Coast
JOC.Com: "These newbuilds are particularly noteworthy in that their air draft — the space between the top of a ship’s bridge and an object such as a bridge or crane — should allow them to transit under the Bayonne Bridge, according to industry analyst Alphaliner. The bridge prevents most mega-ships from reaching the majority of container terminals in the Port of New York and New Jersey, but the port is currently working to the lift the bridge so larger ships can fully access the port, and that work is expected to wrap up in 2017."

Ship upsizing no guarantee of trans-Pacific capacity glut
JOC.com: "The only terminal in the largest East Coast port complex that is not affected by the height limitation of the Bayonne Bridge right now is Global Container Terminal, but Zaninelli cautioned that carriers “can’t dump too much freight on Global” without overtaxing the yard and gates. "
Bayonne welcomes largest container ship to ever call on Port of N.Y. and N.J.
NJ.com: "The Port Authority noted that while the largest ships cannot travel under the Bayonne Bridge until 2017, ships can still dock at GCT Bayonne — just not at all the terminals at the port.
The $1.3 billion "Raise the Roadway" bridge project, which began in May 2013, is designed to raise the navigational clearance under the crossing from 151 feet to 215 feet to allow larger ships to travel under it.
The project was originally slated to achieve navigational clearance this year in time for the completion of the Panama Canal's expansion, but that was pushed back to late 2017, the Port Authority announced last fall."

Panama Canal Update: New Locks, Bigger Ships
JDSupra: "Ports on the West Coast saw a shift to the Panama Canal during 2015 labor disruptions, but have since regained a lot of that business. Some of this container traffic may shift to the Panama Canal now that it can handle larger vessels. However, the new classes of vessels with a capacity of 18,000 TEUs will continue to use West coast ports and will be able to call at U.S. East coast ports via the Suez Canal when infrastructure improvement projects, such as the raising of the Bayonne Bridge between New Jersey and Staten Island, are completed."

Largest ship to call at NY-NJ highlights port productivity challenges
JOC.com: "The opening of the Panama Canal’s new locks is the first of two events expected to result in bigger ships coming to New York-New Jersey. The second — the completion of a $1.3 billion project to raise the clearance under the Bayonne Bridge from 151 feet high to 215 feet — is expected by the end of 2017. That is expected to have a far larger impact — many neo-Panamax vessels, and a sizeable number of even smaller ships, can’t fit under the Bayonne Bridge. GCT Bayonne is the only major New York-New Jersey terminal that is outside the bridge and can accept the largest ships calling the port."
Assessing the Impact of the Panama Canal Expansion
Global Trade Magazine: "Over the next decade South Carolina will invest $700 million in port-related infrastructure projects, on top of $1.3 billion in federal aid. The Port of Miami spent $43 million on four super-sized cranes to handle cargo from larger ships, while in New York and New Jersey, the Bayonne Bridge is being raised from 151 feet above the water to 215 feet, to allow bigger ships to pass through Port Newark and other local ports."

Another Port Authority toll hike? (editorial)
SILive.com: "And, to be fair, we can't say that the authority isn't spending the money. They are raising the Bayonne Bridge and building a Goethals Bridge twin, to name just two projects that will impact Staten Island. But even with that being said, the Bayonne raising is aimed primarily at helping the Port Authority itself, by allowing the new generation of larger "supercontainer" ships to pass underneath it, thus increasing business for the port. Not that Islanders won't appreciate the bridge's wider lanes and the bike and pedestrian walkways."

Truck driver failed to pay Bayonne Bridge toll, but had $6,900 on him: cops
NJ.com: "Port Authority police spokesman Joe Pentangelo said the man was pulled over at around 3:15 p.m. when he failed to pay the toll. Police then found that he had $6,900 on him, Pentangelo added. Furthermore, police learned the company that owns the truck -- KTR Hauler of Perth Amboy -- is responsible for $113,000 in unpaid EZ Pass tolls, Pentangelo said. "
Permanent fix needed for Transportation Trust Fund
APP.com: "Expanding rail freight capacity and dealing with increased truck traffic will be especially important because Port Newark cargo is going to double once the Bayonne Bridge is raised to accommodate the new Panamax super freighters."

The $5.4B Panama Canal Project Completion Proves Anticlimactic
National Real Estate Investor: "However, on the less growth side, the East Coast ports—though busy with tens of billions of dollars of new port improvements to get ready for these new ships that can handle twice the cargo—just didn’t make the deadline. Dredging projects are still ongoing, or even still on the planning table. The most impactful project that would bring products to the millions of consumers—improvements to the New York/New Jersey port that include the $1.3 billion plan to lift the Bayonne Bridge—is stalled until late 2017."

SILive.com: "The Bayonne Bridge, which usually closes on the weekends for "Raise the Roadway" construction, will remain open all weekend."
Panama Canal Expansion: What Awaits Railroad Stocks?
Zacks.com: "This is because these shipments are limited by height of the Bayonne Bridge in New York and inability of East Coast ports to accommodate increasing container volumes, thereby keeping the West Coast railroad volumes intact. The company also said that given a higher proportion of cargo would be at sea due to longer travel period to reach East Coast, financially struggling shipment companies would have to buy more containers which would be tough for them."

Panama Canal: It's OK if You Have a Bigger Boat
Economy Watch: "In addition, in New York, the Bayonne Bridge, which spans the channel between Bayonne, New Jersey and Staten Island, currently restricts both states' biggest ports from accepting these super-sized vessels. The project to raise the bridge has been delayed until the end of 2017 because of engineering miscalculations and construction work slowed by inclement weather."
Panama’s Big Bet, Part 3: A game changer for U.S. trucking?
CCJ: "The consensus is any shift won’t happen overnight. While most major East Coast ports can accept up to 10,000-TUE ships, they are scrambling to complete billion-dollar projects to host the 14,000-TEU ships capable of passing the Panama Canal. The Port of New York and New Jersey is set to complete the Bayonne Bridge navigational clearance project late next year, while the Port of Charleston and Port of Savannah are currently working on dredging projects to allow the largest Neopanamax ships to reach their ports in the next two years."
An expanded Panama Canal opens for giant ships
Journal Star: "This prospect has triggered activity up and down the East Coast. After delays, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey now says that a $1.3 billion project to raise the 85-year-old Bayonne Bridge will enable ships to pass under by late 2017."
Expanded Panama Canal open for business but questions linger on its ability to be a game changer
Logistics: "Gross also noted that many of the East Coast ports are not ready for the bigger ships, as they are either currently lacking the depth (Savannah, Charleston) or height (New York’s Bayonne Bridge), explaining that not many of the bigger ships will be deployed if they can’t call on New York."

Panama Canal expands, opens third lane
Fleet Owner: "A lot of those peaks and valleys have to do with the East Coast ports and how they have been gearing up for the expansion. The biggest problem, Gross noted, is the port of New York and New Jersey, which is an integral part of the ship commodity on the East Coast. Three of the port’s four major terminals could accept the larger container ships, but they are on the wrong side of the Bayonne Bridge, which remains too low to accommodate these new titanic cargo ships. Though the bridge is being raised, that effort isn’t expected to be completed until 2017."
Citizen avoids assaulting a piece of black plastic
Lancaster Eagle-Gazette: That was good advice, though I now understand why they invented whiskey as a calmative. I don’t drink anything stronger than Sam’s Choice Cola from Wal-mart, but I could dearly have used a shot of Old Grand Dad when a flashing sign appeared on our approach to the bridge that would take us to our destination: “Bayonne Bridge Closed. Consider Alternate Routes.”
Port Authority will vote on cashless tolls
NorthJersey.com: "A Port Authority spokesman said the agency plans to institute all-electronic tolling at the Bayonne Bridge with the opening of the bridge’s elevated roadway next year."
Bigger ships heading for Georgia
www.myajc.com: "The port of New York-New Jersey, where 40 percent of East Coast cargo alights, won’t finish raising the Bayonne Bridge to accommodate bigger ships until late next year. Shippers say the biggest vessels won’t come to the East Coast at all without deliveries to the massive New York market."
