JJC Bradfield: The visionary who built the Bridge | dailytelegraph.com.au

JJC Bradfield: The visionary who built the Bridge | dailytelegraph.com.au: "When the Sydney Harbour Bridge was opened, it was the second longest steel arch bridge in the world, just behind the Bayonne Bridge in New Jersey in the US. (Bayonne was opened one year before and was 504 metres long, compared to the 503 metres of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.)

The Sydney Harbour Bridge was immediately, though, the largest single arch bridge in the world. It is higher above the water level than the Bayonne Bridge, and considerably wider, with six lanes of road traffic, two rail tracks and two tram tracks, compared to Bayonne’s two lanes of traffic each way."

Container Shipping - Is the strong level of demand sustainable going forward?

Container Shipping - Is the strong level of demand sustainable going forward?: "Why might the Far East to US East Coast lane become the battlefield of the future? For several reasons. A) The expansion of the Panama Canal to service container ships up to 13,000 TEU from 2016. B) The enlargement of Suez Canal started only a couple of months ago. C) The heightening of the Bayonne Bridge to allow ULCS to call New York/New Jersey. D) The ongoing delivery of ULCS is likely to introduce some of the cost-effective ULCSs on this long-haul trade to reap the economics of scale, beyond the preferred trade for them which is Far East to Europe. E) The expansion of other US East Coast ports that allow them to receive the giant vessels in future, by dredging and introducing larger “Super-Post-Panamax” cranes. The volume growth is already there with much room for expansion. Time will tell how that trade will develop."

Politicians’ positions on Scranton-NYC train vary widely Corbett cites other needs, Wolf ‘will review’ - Times Leader - timesleader.com

Politicians’ positions on Scranton-NYC train vary widely Corbett cites other needs, Wolf ‘will review’ - Times Leader - timesleader.com: "Cartwright said the rail line is an important piece in rebuilding of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s manufacturing economy in that the corporate business people who decide where to build factories prefer to scout out new areas by train.

Also, the widening of the Panama Canal will play a role in funneling more truck traffic onto Interstate 80.

A project is underway to widen and deepen the canal to increase container ship traffic. The Port of New York and New Jersey, the largest port on the East Coast and the third-largest container port in the nation, already had invested $2.3 billion for a project to deepen its harbor to 50 feet by dredging sediment from the channel bottom.

It also is raising the Bayonne Bridge, which connects New York and New Jersey, 64 feet at a cost of $1 billion, to accommodate the larger vessels.

Cartwright said the increased truck traffic will extend car rides.

“Passenger rail is what we need to relieve that congestion,” he said."

THE OFFICE OF MAYOR JAMES M. DAVIS 100th DAY BRIEFING | The City of Bayonne, NJ

THE OFFICE OF MAYOR JAMES M. DAVIS 100th DAY BRIEFING | The City of Bayonne, NJ: "At one of my first public meetings I stated, “The Bridge will be built.” That is as true today as it was nearly one hundred days ago.  However, that does not mean that city residents will need to suffer in silence. My administration holds Bi-weekly Meetings with the Port Authority in order to monitor construction progress. My feeling is that with a project this massive the flow of information is vital to its continuance. Along those lines, we have requested that the Port Authority hold periodic Public Meetings with concerned residents. This ensures that there are levels of accountability, both to my administration and to the Bayonne public at-large.

Along with public input on the Bridge project, come the more objective layers of accountability: data and analysis. To ensure the health, safety, and well being of Bayonne residents, the city has hired two engineering firms to conduct Environmental Testing and offer Structural Assessments of homes in the zone directly impacted by the on-going construction."

NY-NJ port prepares ‘winter plan’ to avoid gridlock repeat | JOC.com

NY-NJ port prepares ‘winter plan’ to avoid gridlock repeat | JOC.com: "Patrick Foye, the port authority’s executive director, said the task force’s recommendations will help New York-New Jersey retain its position as the busiest East Coast port. He noted Georgia Ports Authority CEO Curtiz Foltz’s recent remark in a “State of the Port” address that Savannah hopes eventually to surpass New York-New Jersey in cargo volume.

Last year New York-New Jersey handled nearly 5.5 million 20-foot-equivalent units, compared with about 3 million TEUs at Savannah. But Foye said Foltz’s statement “does underscore the intense competition of the port business today.”

Foy cited $3 billion in port authority investments in the last decade on projects including dredging channels to 50 feet, construction of intermodal rail ramps, raising the Bayonne Bridge by mid-2016.

He said it is “critical” that the port authority continue collecting an infrastructure-funding cargo facility charge that has been challenged by container lines before the FMC and in the New Jersey Legislature."
