Global port terminal rises from edges of the Cooper River
SC Biz News: "The widening of the Panama Canal, which was completed last summer, and the raising of the Bayonne Bridge between New Jersey and New York, which is slated to be finished in mid-2019, are expected to bring more and bigger ships to the East Coast, including to the Port of Charleston. "

US port deepening fight intensifies on funding worries
JOC.com: "Ports that aren’t able to allow ocean carriers to bring in larger ships risk being kept off service loops that favor ports than can. Carriers are bringing larger ships to call the East Coast after the expanded Panama Canal locks opened in June, but they have held off on deploying more large ships because only one marine terminal at the Port of New York and New Jersey can handle them. When raising the Bayonne Bridge is completed in late 2017, carriers will have more of an incentive to deploy larger ships, since all marine terminals at the largest East Coast port will be able to handle them. The ports of Miami, Baltimore, and Virginia can handle ships loaded up to 14,000 TEUs since their harbor depths are at least 50 feet."

Editorial: PATH, bus terminal essential to PA
NorthJersey.com: "The replacement of the Goethals Bridge is underway. Elevation of the Bayonne Bridge will allow new, larger container ships to access our ports. And even Port Authority critics, state Sens. Loretta Weinberg, D-Teaneck, and Bob Gordon, D-Fair Lawn, told The Record’s editorial board recently that the remodeled GWB Bus Station, nearing completion despite delays, will be impressive once it is opened."

NY-NJ terminal blames harsh weather for truck delays
JOC.com: "The congestion reflects the difficulties at the heavily used port, where turn times can easily rise above two hours, as it works to ensure the swift and smooth arrival of trucks and containers in and out of the port in preparation for the arrival of increasingly larger ships. That is expected to happen once a project to elevate the Bayonne Bridge is completed at the end of 2017. At present, the low elevation of the bridge prevents big ships passing below and reaching three out of the four terminals — among them PNCT."

Traffic Continues During 'Raise the Roadway' Project
Construction Equipment Guide: “The project marks the first time engineers are building a bridge roadway above the original span, even as the lower road continues to carry traffic,” said Neal Buccino, senior public information officer with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. “It will maintain the steel arch that makes the Bayonne Bridge a civil engineering landmark, while giving drivers a safer, wider and more modern roadway with 12-foot lanes, new shoulders, a median divider, and a 12-foot bike and pedestrian walkway.”

Big ship ready – Video Case Histories
DC Velocity: "That Bayonne Bridge project she mentions is a massive engineering marvel and one of the largest ever undertaken in the region. The $1.3 billion project involves building a new roadway 65 feet above the original road surface. The tricky part is that the construction is taking place while commuters, trucks, and others are using the bridge on a daily basis. Once completed, the original roadway will be removed so that taller ships as large as 18,000 TEUs can easily pass below."

NY-NJ appointment system cuts truck turns without major hitch
JOC: "The system, at just one of out of six terminals at the largest port on the East Coast, is designed to improve drayage efficiency. Such efficiency at the port is critical as it prepares to meet the increased workload and additional systemic stress expected after the completion of a project at the end of this year to raise the Bayonne Bridge. The project will enable ships that can carry more than 10,000 twenty-foot-equivalent units to stop at all four of the port’s main terminals. Only one — Global Container Terminal — is at present accessible to big ships because they can’t get under the bridge."
Is 2017 the Year of the Anticipated Coastal Import Shift?
Colliers International: "ALL EYES ON THE BAYONNE BRIDGE: New York-New Jersey, the largest port on the East Coast, is still expected to be the main beneficiary of any increase in inbound container volume from the Panama Canal expansion. This is because of its proximity to the largest population concentration on the East Coast and the recent dredging project that deepened its harbor to 50 feet."

Where the Second Avenue Subway Went Wrong
The New Yorker: "When New Jersey wanted to raise the roadway of the Bayonne Bridge, it took five years, and twenty thousand pages of paperwork, for the project to get under way. Obviously, environmental and workplace standards are important, but a recent paper by Philip Howard, the chairman of Common Good, suggests that a more streamlined regulatory process, like those found in many developed countries, could save hundreds of billions of dollars."

New alliances, bigger ships put US ports on high alert
JOC.com: "At New York-New Jersey, the largest port on the East Coast and the third-largest in the US, 2017 is likely to be dominated by the port’s preparation for the year-end opening of the elevated Bayonne Bridge. The bridge, which will be 215 feet high instead of 151 feet currently, will enable ships of up to 18,000-TEU capacity to call at all four of the port’s main terminals. Only ships of less than 10,000 TEUs are currently able to call because the existing bridge is too low to allow large ships to berth at three of the port’s main terminals; only Global Container Terminal in Bayonne, New Jersey, located on the channel before the bridge, is currently able to service larger ships."

Verrazano lane closures show MTA just doesn't care (commentary)
SILive.com: "It almost seems futile to complain. Because what has complaining gotten us in the past? Nothing. Entities like the MTA and Department of Transportation, both city and state, probably figure that when it comes to anything related to traffic, Staten Islanders are just going to complain anyway, so why should we listen to what they have to say? Let's just do whatever we need to do. Here's why they should listen: Because we're the ones paying the freight. Particularly when it comes to the Verrazano, the toll money from which is used to subsidize the Long Island Railroad and Metro-North. And because we're the ones who are vitally dependent on the Verrazano, like we're vitally dependent on the other three Staten Island spans. After all, we are an island. There's no other way for us to drive off the borough. It's not like this everywhere. In a show of motorist consideration, the project to raise the Bayonne Bridge is being suspended so the bridge can stay open around the clock this holiday season."
How does an N.J. driver get a discount on Staten Island bridges?
NJ.com: "Generally, you would be out of luck if you're using a New York MTA run bridge, such as the Verrazano Bridge, to and from Staten Island. But the Outerbridge is run by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which offers a commuter discount for its Staten Island crossings, which include the Outerbridge Crossing, the Goethals Bridge and the Bayonne Bridge. He'll answer your questions on Tuesdays and Thursdays on NJ.com. You can also Tweet @CommutingLarr are in luck. Drivers who sign up for the agency's Staten Island bridges plan get a 50 percent discount off the E-Z-Pass rate of $12.50 which comes to $6.25 per trip. Drivers have to make a minimum of three Staten Island-bound trips a month to qualify for the plan."

NY-NJ port loses East Coast share amid congestion concerns
JOC.com: "The port has also invested heavily to bring on-dock or near-dock railway to the port’s five biggest terminals and to dredge its channels to 50 feet. Late in 2017, the authority expects to complete the raising of the Bayonne Bridge’s 151-foot vertical clearance to 215, feet, allowing larger ships to fit under it. The present low elevation means that at present most ships larger than 10,000 twenty-foot-equivalent units, and many smaller vessels, can get to only one of the port’s terminals."

On Tuesday, as the bridge celebrated its special day, the Port Authority made a special announcement of its own regarding its progress with the project: The installation of a new, elevated roadway that stands 215 feet above mean high water over the Kill Van Kull and 64 feet higher than the existing roadway. The additional air draft will allow the Port of New York and New Jersey to welcome larger and more efficient vessels.
Media was invited Tuesday to walk over the new roadway, which will initially open with two 12-foot lanes of traffic, one in each direction."

Six Bridges : The Legacy of Othmar H. Ammann: Darl Rastorfer
Amazon.com: Othmar Ammann's name may be unfamiliar, but the six magnificent New York City bridges he created are known to all: George Washington, Bayonne, Triborough, Bronx-Whitestone, Throgs Neck, and Verrazano-Narrows. Ammann's long-span bridges came to define an epoch and shape the modern New York metropolis. This book is the first to examine the genius of Ammann and the special group of bridges he designed and engineered as part of the New York region's interstate highway system. With more than 200 archival photographs, the book vividly displays the physical transformation of New York, the development of long-span suspension structures, the construction process of each bridge, and the spectacular completed bridges. Widely considered the greatest American bridge designer of the twentieth century, Swiss-born Ammann (1879-1965) gained experience designing railroad bridges in Pennsylvania before beginning his work in New York City. This book considers the artistic, scientific, and technical achievements embodied in the six major bridges Ammann produced between 1925 and 1964, as well as the bridges' impact on the city. The book features an illustrated and annotated list of all Ammann's built and unbuilt projects and a glossary of technical terms.

Prospects for a New Container Terminal at Halifax
Maritime.com"Prior to the opening of the enlarged Panama Canal to transit neo-Panamax size ships of 13,000 TEUs, several North American East Coast ports undertook programs to modify their berths and terminals for the larger container ships. At Newark, the Bayonne Bridge was raised to transit the larger ships at high tide, while the port was dredged to accommodate deeper draft vessels. At Halifax, the Angus L. MacDonald Bridge was raised to 50 meters above sea level to transit larger vessels that could sail into Bedford Basin. Work is underway at Saint John, New Brunswick, to serve neo-Panamax ships."

N.S. should support port of Halifax over container facilities in Canso, Sydney: study
CTV Atlantic News: "The study raises a number of red flags for the Port of Halifax's future, saying that the shipping industry may be about to go through a period of consolidation and Halifax is considered a "discretionary" harbour in comparison to competitors along the U.S. northeastern coast and Montreal. The raising of the Bayonne Bridge in New York will increase the harbour's ability to admit large ships and "this will likely erode some of the Port of Halifax's business as it will no longer have the same advantage over New York/New Jersey for accommodating ships over 8,000 TEUs," it says. The lack of a large local market also creates headwinds for the success of Halifax, as ships tend to prefer to unload at larger centers where they can increase profits by offloading close to the final destination, says the report."

Nightmare Before Christmas
AJOT.COM: " In the PANYNJ a recent Hanjin vessel scheduled to call at a terminal in Newark Bay had to be diverted to Global Marine Terminal, Bayonne. You see there was no export cargo going out on this ship so she rode higher in the water. In fact, too high to make it back under the Bayonne Bridge. Can you imagine what a nightmare this caused for containers scheduled to be mounted on wheels in one terminal and now diverted to another?"

NY-NJ port takes aim at congestion, Midwest market via rail
JOC.com: "The port authority last month completed the dredging of its main channels to 50 feet. A $1.3 billion project to raise the Bayonne Bridge’s 151-foot vertical clearance to 215 feet is scheduled for completion at the end of 2017. The bridge raising will allow larger ships to reach all of the port’s four main container terminals instead of only Global, which lies outside the bridge."

Noseweek: "The bridge finally opened on 19 March 1932. At 505 metres, it was aiming to become the largest single- span-arch bridge in the world. Alas, just before the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon, Bryson wryly records that “the Bayonne bridge in New York quietly opened and was found to be 6.35cm – 0.121% longer.”

Expanded Panama Canal to affect North American logistics flows
MMD: "In New York, for example, harbour navigation channels were deepened, and the Bayonne bridge, at the entrance of Newark Bay, is being raised. The project was touted as possibly “the most important and influential project related to modern day economics in the Northeast. Modern-day container ships may now enter the port fully loaded and safely,” said Col. David Caldwell, the Army Corps’ New York District Commander.
“Completion of the harbour deepening project is a major milestone in our efforts to meet the needs of the region’s 23 million consumers now and in the future,” said Port Authority Port Department Director Molly Campbell. “It culminates more than 25 years of work and $6 billion in public and private sector investment to ready the port for the new generation of vessels, and will continue to support the 336,000 jobs and billions in economic activity the port generates.”
The New York project will ensure that area businesses have easier and more affordable access to global markets with the completion of the Panama Canal expansion—and improve the shipping of goods to nearly 100 million American consumers living on the East Coast."

Why can t cops crack down on jitney buses Death of an 11 year old in Jersey City may cause a change
Hudson Reporter: "Some of the jitneys that run from the foot of the Bayonne Bridge to New York City are covered under federal interstate laws, and so it would take a federal authority to oversee any street side inspection. "

Last two Hanjin ships set to call NY-NJ port
JOC.com: "The Hanjin Bremerhaven’s arrival follows the berthing Tuesday of another Hanjin ship that was previously arrested and held near the Panama Canal, the 7,500-TEU Hanjin Baltimore. It unloaded 1,500 containers at Maher Terminals and then moved to Global Container Terminals in Bayonne to unload 200 more containers.
The Hanjin Baltimore stopped at both terminals to avoid any problems passing under the Bayonne Bridge.
The bridge is too low for larger ships to pass under without being weighed down with cargo, but vessels must do so to get to Maher Terminals, the only one of the port’s four main terminals with a regular Hanjin call. Port officials worried that if all the containers were removed from the vessel at Maher Terminals, the ship would be too high to go under the bridge on departure."

New Hudson River rail tunnel could be funded by 2019
NJ.com: "The Hudson River tunnels have been included on the "President's Permitting Dashboard" which allows the same kind of fast tracking that the Port Authority used to speed up reconstruction of the Bayonne Bridge. That could save one year on an environmental review that is under way and "billions of dollars" off the final Gateway cost, Schumer said."
Hanjin ships head to NY-NJ as lawyers squabble
JOC.Com: "The Hanjin Switzerland docked at Maher Terminals about 7 p.m. Thursday in an unusual two-part move that also involved a stop at the Global Container Terminal in Bayonne, where cargo was removed and placed on a barge and sent on to Maher Terminals. The move was designed to avoid problems fitting the ship under the Bayonne Bridge."

Hanjin Bankruptcy Fiasco Still Hurting Apparel Importers
California Apparel News: "On the East Coast, a Hanjin ship that was to dock at Maher Terminals at the Port of New York and New Jersey will be landing at the Global Container Terminal in Bayonne, N.J. The concern was if the ship left the port filled with empty cargo containers it would sit too high and not be able to pass under the Bayonne Bridge.
So cargo will be unloaded in Bayonne, loaded onto a barge and taken to Maher Terminals."

Trump and Clinton pledge billions to fix US infrastructure
E&T Magazine: "One example he frequently cites is the Bayonne Bridge ‘Raise the Roadway’ project. Its economic objective is sound. The bridge connects New Jersey and Staten Island, NY, and raising its clearance will allow the new generation of larger Panamax container ships to pass easily into Newark Bay.
This is being achieved by building a new roadway above the existing one and removing the original. The bridge’s existing foundations and rights-of-way were carefully integrated into the design so that it would arguably have no significant environmental impact.
Yet, as Howard points out, there was a five-year pre-project review that resulted in a 20,000-page environmental assessment. Even after Bayonne’s approval, the project was then challenged in court by groups who thought the assessment insufficient."

Second Hanjin ship to call NY-NJ port since bankruptcy
JOC.com: "By docking at that terminal, rather than the scheduled point of arrival at Maher Terminals, the 9,030-twenty-foot-equivalent-unit vessel will avoid any possible difficulty passing under the Bayonne Bridge, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said Tuesday."

Port of New York/New Jersey is meeting tomorrow’s challenges
AJOT.COM: "The Kill Van Kull is the principle strait through which all cargo ships enter Port Elizabeth and Port Newark. Robbins Reef Light marks the entrance to the channel, which spans 3 miles to Bergen Point, just under the Bayonne Bridge. At its widest point it is 0.5 miles. The Kill’s four doglegs are of particular interest to harbor pilots. A starboard turn must also be negotiated after clearing the bridge between Bergen Point and Shooters Island, a span of 0.65 mi in order to reach the container terminals in Newark Bay. The MSC Beryl with a 12,400 TEU capacity has a length of over 12,000 feet and a beam of nearly 159 feet. She draws 50.85-feet of water. As a result of her size, the ship will have to await high tide to transit through the Kill Van Kull. It’s been said that big ships act like giant sails. With minimal water under her keel and a 15-knot wind, a ship like the MSC Beryl will require skillful navigating to transit from the Upper New York Bay to Newark Bay."
